Michael Hadley, an aquatic biologist with the UDWR, sent in this report on Fish Lake.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conducted a gill net survey at Fish Lake on May 17, 2012. This annual survey is designed to monitor the lake’s rainbow and splake trout populations but, at Fish Lake, we’re always prepared to see something exciting. On this beautiful spring morning we caught a couple mid-sized lake trout (12 and 15 lbs) as well as two large tiger muskies measuring 40 and 44 inches. Tiger...

Lake Powell Fish Report May 22 2012
Lake Elevation: 3636
Water Temperature 70-75 F
By: Wayne Gustaveson of Wayne's Words

We did a tour of the recent hot spots and found fish holding in the same spots as last week. Not much change has occurred. That means fishing remains really good for these species: juvenile striped bass, walleye and smallmouth bass. Ripe male stripers that were caught well two weeks ago have disappeared. I am sorry to report that bait fishing for stripers in the main channel is not productive. That may improve after stripers spawn in the next two weeks.

Small stripers...

A legal ruling on the stream access issue in Utah came down Monday and it answered, sort of, some questions. Judge Derek Pullan made the long awaited and overdue decision Monday on the lawsuit the Utah Stream Access Coalition brought against the state regarding the constitutionality of HB141.
Pullan ruled that the Utah Constitution clearly regards waters HB141 restricted from public access two years ago as owned by the state and they must be managed in public trust. Pullan, however, did not say that public access on streams crossing private property is required. He has asked the involved parties to provide him with more information for another ruling later...

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, for all of its promoting good fishing in the state, has - at least in my opinion - seemingly been avoiding talking about the issues.

Word about on-line fishing surveys, open houses in the five regions and possible regulation changes has come from the inner circles of the fishing community and has not been shared widely with the public.
That being said, I was glad to see an email Monday announcing "Fisheries Open Houses" for the Central Region being held May 22 and May 24. My only criticism is they are landing in media outlet email boxes too close to the meetings to a...

The annual spring netting survey conducted by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources at Flaming Gorge is done. Always cool to see these fish come in from the nets and then watch them swim away. The video was shot during the netting in 2011. Here's the report from Thursday's action.

Thanks for Flaming Gorge Project Leader Ryan Mosley for sending all the reports and the great pictures.

We concluded our spring netting on Flaming Gorge today with some big catches. We shattered our previous "big fish" of the sampling season, not once but twice, with a 26.6 and 30.4...

The Green River has been getting some attention in recent weeks. The entire river from its headwaters in the Wind Rivers of Wyoming to its confluence with the Colorado in Canyonlands was named Tuesday as the No. 2 most endangered river in the United States by American Rivers. Here's my story on that announcement. We also did a story about how high runoff in 2011 will mean fat fish and happy anglers for years to come.

The annual spring netting surveys at Flaming Gorge Reservoir continue this week. Ryan Mosley, Flaming Gorge Project Leader for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report from netting Wednesday.

We moved our efforts to Sheep Creek Bay today, where the weather was fantastic and the nets were full of fish! What a great "office", as seen by the sunrise looking east towards the butte that motivated John Wesley Powell to name this area, the Flaming Gorge.

The shore sets were dominated by abundant rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. Many of the rainbow trout were in the 16-18 inch range...

Ryan Mosley, Flaming Gorge Project Leader for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report as netting surveys continue on the reservoir.

Today, we finished up our second day of netting at Jarvies Bay. It was a beautiful morning on the water. It was warm with a calm breeze, rainbows were seen dimpling the surface, and the distant calls of geese, ospreys, mourning doves, great horned owls, and even the serenade of the canyon wren, filled our ears. This is a fish sampling report though, so I guess I better get to it....

We sampled 10 lake trout in our open water sets, but the size was ...

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists conducted a second day of netting surveys at Flaming Gorge on May 14. Here's a report from Flaming Gorge Project Leader Ryan Mosley.

We moved our netting to Jarvies Bay, where we spend two days targeting shoreline-oriented species and also trophy lake trout. We sampled a total of 10 lake trout up to 21 lbs in the open water lake trout sets. Lake trout diets included kokanee, rainbow trout, and small invertebrates like midges and scuds. We sampled numerous rainbow trout up to 18-inches, smallmouth bass up to 1.5 lbs, and smaller lake trout in the shoreline sets...

Bear Lake Fishing Report:
Fishing on Bear Lake has been fair for cutthroat trout and lake trout. Try trolling or jigging for cutthroat and lake trout in water depths of 20-60 feet. Use large minnow-type lures in 4-7” lengths or flatfish in the U-20-M2 sizes trolled from downriggers. When jigging, use whole cisco or jigs tipped with cisco. Once cutthroat run up the tributary streams to spawn and return to the lake, they begin to feed heavily and the fishing should...

Lake Powell Fish Report – May 10, 2012
Lake Elevation: 3635
Water Temperature 64-72 F
By: Wayne Gustaveson of Wayne's Words.

For another week Lake Powell’s water level is stable and temperature remains in the low 60’s which is ideal for excellent bass, walleye and crappie fishing. With day length and ambient temperature increasing the best tip is to fish in the shade. That includes the shady side of an individual rock or the shady side of a canyon. Seek shade to increase catch.

Bass nests are still seen in the clear water and some have male guards cruising in the vicinity. But bass spawni...

Biologists from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources have started the annual spring netting surveys at Flaming Gorge Reservoi. Flaming Gorge Project Leader Ryan Mosley sent in this report. The video comes from a day of netting on the Gorge in the spring of 2011.

We kicked off our annual spring netting this morning at Antelope Flat. Heading down the road to the launch, we had a mountain lion run through the headlights. It was a welcome sighting of this elusive species, but afterward we pondered whether that was good or bad luck!

Michael Hadley, an aquatics biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report of a gillnetting survey conducted May 8 at Panguitch Lake.

We found rainbow trout ranging from 9 to 18 inches. Cutthroat trout from 10 to 20 inches were abundant and the number of tiger trout observed was the highest since they were introduced in 2006. We even caught a few cutthroat and tiger trout above the 22-inch slot limit. Trout were in good condition. The number of fish caught indicated that there were no appreciable losses due to low water after the malfunction of the dam in fall 2011. Once again, no Ut...

Anglers having a hard time deciding where to fish these days might want to turn their attention to Rockport Reservoir. The Rafter B tagged trout contest will run through the end of May. Only seven of the 46 tagged trout have been turned in and the $2,500 cash prize is still swimming around out there. That or it was eaten and someone used the tag to pick their teeth. Tagged fish should be taken the Rafter B store in Wanship to determine the prize. Visit this link or call 435-336-2241 for more information.

Michael Hadley, an aquatic biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report of a gillnetting survey at Mill Meadow Reservoir last week.

Mill Meadow Reservoir: At Mill Meadow Reservoir, we found the usual assortment: wild brown trout, yellow perch, and large Utah suckers. The suckers were so large (some weighing nearly 6 pounds) that they dominated the biomass of fish caught during the survey. Most brown trout ranged from 10 to 16 inches, though one 22-inch fish was observed. Yellow perch ranged from 7 to 10 inches. Of the fish species that are actually stocked in the reservoir, we fou...

Michael Hadley, an aquatic biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report of a gillnetting survey at Forsyth Reservoir last week.

Forsyth Reservoir: Good numbers of splake and tiger trout were observed with 14- to 17-inch fish most dominant and a couple of tiger trout exceeding 20 inches and 3 pounds. Unfortunately, we also found lots of small yellow perch. These fish were illegally introduced to the reservoir around 2008 or 2009 and are quickly increasing in abundance. While perch fishing may be fairly good for a couple of years, they will eventually begin to have a negative impact...

Michael Hadley, an aquatic biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, sent in this report of a gillnetting survey at Koosharem Reservoir last week.

Koosharem Reservoir: On May 1, UDWR found healthy rainbow, cutthroat, and even a few brook trout in Koosharem. Most trout were 14 to 17 inches in length, with the biggest at 21 inches and four pounds. Trout numbers were not high, but the fish were in good condition. Utah chubs, however, were very abundant, making up a significant portion of the fish biomass sampled during the survey. With such a high density of chubs, fishing is often tough at Koosharem, ...

Water Temperature 64-66 F
By: Wayne Gustaveson - Wayne's Words
On Hold!

Lake Powell is stable and holding at elevation 3635 (MSL) where it has been for over a month. Water flowing in equals water flowing out with no sign of increased runoff. This means that bass and crappie nests are still visible. Water temperature is holding in the low 60’s which is ideal for excellent bass, walleye and crappie fishing. The end result is ideal fishing conditions that will continue for a few more weeks. Here are the details.

I've been running a lot of info on the Green River these days and for good reason. As I mentioned may happen last year, the high flows in the spring/summer of 2011 flushed the river of years of sediment and gunk setting the plate for incredible insect production. The result is fat fish. The great thing about these fish is despite the abundance of food they are still willing to hit fake food so get there now.

It is the third week of April and true to form bass are returning to the shallows to spawn. There was some early nest building during the first week of April which happens only occasionally, but the actual spawn will occur during the coming week.

Green River Electrofishing Report, Part 2 – More Bugs and Fatter Fish

OK, so there's no way I could have believed that the report from Monday night's survey at Tailrace could be topped, but last night at Little Hole was absolutely incredible. State wildlife officials confirmed Monday that the 30-pound 4-ounce carp shot by Stephen Shemenski with archery equipment on the Willard Spur on April 7 is the new record.

All possible record fish must be weighed on certifiable scales. In this case, the closest place was the local Smith's store.

Many of the strains of rainbow trout stocked on the Green and Flaming Gorge are spring spawners, making them fun to target/catch and absolutely beautiful specimens to hold. Gill netting report on Piute Reservoir from Michael Hadley, a fisheries biologists with the UDWR's southern region.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conducted a gill net survey at Piute Reservoir on April 11, 2012, in order to monitor the current state of the fishery. While we found rainbow trout ranging from 10 to 19 inches, they were not as abundant as we had hoped. Utah chubs, however, were very abundant, providing a clue as to why the rainbows are struggling. The previously strong population of rainbow trout was hit hard when the reservoir was nearly drained in the fall of 2009. Since that time, Utah chubs have rapidly increased in abundan...

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conducted a gill net survey at Otter Creek Reservoir on April 10, 2012, in order to monitor the condition of the trout fishery. As always, we found plenty of fat, healthy rainbow trout. The two predominant size groups are 10 to 12 inches and 16 to 18 inches in length. Imagine my surprise when checking the water level to find out that Lake Powell has risen since the last report. Normally lake level does not climb until April. The recent wet storm front has already had an impact on the lake. Now lake level will likely continue the normal slow decline expected in March but that was really fun to see the little bump in elevation.
