Today, in The Cricket's predictions for the 89th annual Academy Awards, it's time to tackle the craft categories.

In Tuesday's opening installment, it was the technical categories. On Thursday, it's the short-film categories and the specialty features (animation, documentary and foreign-language). And on Friday, both on the blog and in The Salt Lake Tribune's print edition, will be the top eight: Best Picture, director, and the acting and screenwriting categories.

The Academy Awards ceremony takes place Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood — and televised live, starting at 6 p.m., on ABC, KTVX, Ch. 4. Follow along with The Cricket on Twitter, @moviecricket, on Sunday.

Cinematography

The nominees are • Bradford Young, "Arrival"; Linus Sandgren, "La La Land"; Greig Fraser, "Lion"; James Laxton, "Moonlight"; Rodrigo Prieto, "Silence."

Who will win • Sandgren's candy-colored views of Los Angeles will probably add one more statuette to a "La La Land" sweep.

Who should win • The moody shadows of the streets in "Moonlight" have stuck in my head for months.

Production design

The nominees are • Patrice Vermette (production design); Paul Hotte (set decoration), "Arrival"; Stuart Craig (production design); Anna Pinnock (set decoration), "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"; Jess Gonchor (production design); Nancy Haigh (set decoration), "Hail, Caesar!"; David Wasco (production design); Sandy Reynolds-Wasco (set decoration), "La La Land"; Guy Hendrix Dyas (production design); Gene Serdena (set decoration), "Passengers."

Who will win • Another one for "La La Land," with its mix between L.A. realism and Hollywood fantasy.

Who should win • The most completely realized world among these five is the 1926 New York of J.K. Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts."

Costume design

The nominees are • Joanna Johnston, "Allied"; Colleen Atwood, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"; Consolata Boyle, "Florence Foster Jenkins"; Madeline Fontaine, "Jackie"; Mary Zophres, "La La Land."

Who will win • Fontaine's meticulous work in "Jackie" may edge out "La La Land."

Who should win • Much of what made director Pablo Larrain's re-creation of Camelot come alive in "Jackie" was the way the clothes matched Mrs. Kennedy's moods.

Makeup and hairstyling

The nominees are • Eva von Bahr and Love Larson, "A Man Called Ove"; Joel Harlow and Richard Alonzo, "Star Trek Beyond"; Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson, "Suicide Squad."

Who will win • Harlow won for J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" in 2009, and will probably repeat this year for "Star Trek Beyond."

Who should win • The array of aliens in "Star Trek Beyond" was more interesting than the costumed creeps in "Suicide Squad."

Music - original score

The nominees are • Mica Levi, "Jackie"; Justin Hurwitz, "La La Land"; Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka, "Lion"; Nicholas Britell, "Moonlight"; Thomas Newman, "Passengers."

Who will win • What's a musical without music? "La La Land" all the way.

Who should win • Levi's haunting, dissonant score in "Jackie" was astonishing, but I'd still vote for the many moods of "La La Land."

Original song

The nominees are • "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" (from "La La Land"), music by Justin Hurwitz, lyric by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul; "Can't Stop the Feeling" (from "Trolls"), music and lyric by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster; "City of Stars" (from "La La Land"), music by Justin Hurwitz, lyric by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul; "The Empty Chair" (from "Jim: The James Foley Story"), music and lyric by J. Ralph and Sting; "How Far I'll Go" (from "Moana"), music and lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Who will win • The love theme of "La La Land," "City of Stars" is the most hummable of the bunch.

Who should win • Right movie, wrong song: I'm more partial to "Audition," Emma Stone's showstopper and — true to its title — a future staple at theater auditions around the world. (As a "Hamilton" fan, it pains me not to vote for Lin-Manuel Miranda, but he'll have more opportunities to get the last part of his EGOT.)
