As Utahns pick the Independence Day firework debris out of their lawns, it's time for local artists to think about Christmas and candy.

For the fourth year running, the Macy's store at Salt Lake City's City Creek Center, 21 S. Main St., is putting out the call for artists to submit designs for its candy-filled Christmas windows — a holiday tradition that goes back to the 1970s, when the store was ZCMI.

Six artists will be picked to design and create a giant holiday ornament made of candy. The artist must create and install his or her candy creation. Macy's will provide the materials — starting with a 42-inch wide Styrofoam ball — and promote the artists' bio and website.

Artists are asked to submit a rendering and brief description of their design, a brief description of their artistic background, and a short essay about why they want to be involved in the candy window project. Entries will be judged on feasibility and theme.

The six selected artists will install their works from Nov. 1 to Nov. 16. The windows will be on display Nov. 17 to Jan. 1.

Deadline for entries is Aug. 1. Send entries to Chad Young at Macy's: Chad.young@macys.com.
