This week's Utah Crowd-Funding Project is a game with a purpose.

"Tumorman" is the creation of three friends — an oncologist, a pharmacist and a game designer — who have seen the effects of cancer firsthand. Their idea was to create a game platform that would be entertaining, and teach people about cancer.

The game is set "in a world where evil cancer is creating havoc." Into this world enters Tumorman, a superhoer "born to defeat [cancer] once and for all."

The makers hope the game will help educate gamers about cancer, and help empower them to make decisions that will lead to improved treatment outcomes.

The makers are trying to raise $15,000 to develop the game, and have started a crowd-funding campaign via Kickstarter. So far, the campaign has raised $3,724. The deadline is June 12.

Benefits for backers range from an online thank you (for $3) to a package that includes a lunch date with the game's creators (for $5,000).

If you have a crowd-funding project you'd like mentioned on The Cricket blog, email it to: spmeans@sltrib.com. Be sure to put "crowd funding" in the subject line.
