The Slamdance Film Festival has announced the 20 films — 12 narrative features and eight documentaries — that will fill its competitive programs this January.

Slamdance marks its 22nd year as the upstart counterpart to the larger Sundance Film Festival. Slamdance runs Jan. 22-28 at the Treasure Mountain Inn, at the top of Old Main Street in Park City.

To be eligible for the competition programs, films must be made by first-time directors for a budget of less than $1 million, and have no U.S. distribution in place. The films are eligible for jury awards, audience awards and the Spirit of Slamdance Award, which is chosen by the filmmakers themselves.

Here are the titles of the Slamdance competition films, with synopses provided by Slamdance. (All are U.S. productions, unless otherwise indicated.)

"All the Colors of the Night" • Director: Pedro Severien; Screenwriter: Luiz Otávio Pereira (Brazil) • "Iris wakes up in her spacious seafront apartment, discovers a body in the living room and enlists the help of other women, setting off a spiral of redemption in an atmospheric drama of dark imagery and questionable reality."
