Steve Williams is bringing jazz back to the Salt Lake City radio dial.

The longtime radio host, who retired from his 31-year run on public-radio station KUER in June, will launch a Sunday show on public-radio station KCPW this month.

"Jazz Time With Steve Williams" will air Sundays, from 6 to 10 p.m., starting Oct. 18. It will air on KCPW, 88.3 FM, or streaming on the station's website.

The show will mostly feature music, the station announced, but will include interviews, live performances, history, and a musical calendar of events.

"Over the past few months, so many friends, nighttime radio listeners and jazz music-lovers have been asking for this news," Williams said in a statement. "I'm very glad to say that jazz is going back on-air with KCPW."

KUER is donating part of its jazz library, which Williams helped amass over the years, to KCPW.

Supporters for the program include the GAM Foundation (the organizers of the JazzSLC concert series), the Excellence in the Community concert series, and The Garage on Beck.

Williams' new show is just one change coming to KCPW's weekend line-up.

Two national programs that air on Saturdays — the news-interview show "Bob Edwards Weekend" and the comedy-variety show "Wits" — are being cancelled nationally, and will go off the air early this month. KCPW also is dropping two more weekly shows: "Tech Nation" and the BBC's "History Hour."

New programs coming to KCPW's line-up are:

• "Interfaith Voices," a leading independent weekly religion newsmagazine, hosted by Maureen Fiedler.

• "The New Jazz Archive," a weekly series on jazz's place in American life, hosted by longtime composer/musician Jeff Haas.

In addition, KCPW will start airing the hourlong versions of two existing half-hour shows: The scholarly interview program "With Good Reason," and the comedy game show "Says You!"

The new schedule will take effect Monday, Oct. 12.

(Disclaimer: KCPW airs "Behind the Headlines," a show featuring reporters from The Salt Lake Tribune, Fridays at 9 a.m. and Sundays at 6 a.m.)
