Here's what is happening in pop culture:

• Add a new title to the Oscar race: "The Big Short," director Adam McKay's adaptation of Michael Lewis' book about traders making millions off the 2008 collapse of the real-estate market. The movie, starring Christian Bale and Brad Pitt, will close the AFI Fest in November, then open in December. [The Hollywood Reporter]

• Jordan Peele, half of the comedy team Key & Peele, will direct a horror movie, "Get Out," that also deals with issues of race relations. [THR]

• Jack Olsen, best known for playing Jimmy Olsen in the 1950s' "The Adventures of Superman," has died at the age of 87. The actor-turned-playwright was once romantically linked to Montgomery Clift, and was life partner to director James Bridges ("Bright Lights, Big City"). [Los Angeles Times]
