This week's Utah Crowd-Funding Project is a real horror show.

Salt Lake City composer/pianist Kagan Breitenbach has a plan to celebrate to joys of classic themes from horror films. He is creating custom arrangements to 13 classic horror movies — including "Psycho," "Jaws," "Halloween," "The Exorcist" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" — into works for a string quartet.

Breitenbach is working with a quartet — violinists Donggin (John) Shin and Jakob Hofer, violist Leslie Richards and cellist Lauren Posey — to perform those arrangements at a show, "Quartet Macabre," on Oct. 7 at the Tower Theatre, 876 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City.

Breitenbach is aiming to raise money to pay the musicians, as well as artists who will provide visuals to the music on the Tower's screen. He has started a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter, to raise $1,500 or more. So far, the campaign has raised $220 in pledges. The deadline is Oct. 3.

Benefits for backers range from a ticket to the show (for $5) to having the quartet record a song of your choice (for $500).

Proceeds from ticket sales, Breitenbach says, will go to the Salt Lake Film Society, the nonprofit that runs the Tower and Broadway Centre Cinemas.
