Discovery Gateway, the children's museum in downtown Salt Lake City, has a new boss.

Laurie Hopkins has been named Discovery Gateway's new executive director and chief executive officer, the museum announced Tuesday. She started work on July 6.

Hopkins arrives at Discovery Gateway after working since 2006 for the Sundance Institute — most recently, since January 2013, as co-managing director of Robert Redford's nonprofit arts organization.

"I am thrilled to join the Discovery Gateway family," Hopkins said in a statement. "I firmly believe in its rewarding mission to inspire children of all ages to imagine, discover and connect with the world around them. Children grow and develop with experiential learning, and we offer this critical service to our diverse Utah community."

Chuck J. Grahmann, chairman of the museum's board of directors, said Hopkins "has the skills and leadership to successfully introduce the next generation of Discovery Gateway families to a world of exploration, discovery and imagination."

Discovery Gateway was founded in 1977, as the Children's Museum of Utah. It's located in The Gateway shopping center, at 444 W. 100 South, Salt Lake City.
