The first day of the Utah Arts Festival ended the way it's supposed to end — with a cacophony of sounds, one genre bleeding into the other depending on which way you're walking.

Walking west from the Amphitheater Stage, the triple-guitar attack of Idaho alt-country band Micky & the Motorcars bleeds into the over-amped rap of the Utah hip-hop collective House of Lewis. Leave the Amphitheater area, you'll pass the pop-rock of Utah County band Fictionist. Keep walking and you'll hear the slam poets on the Big Mouth Stage before coming across The Saliva Sisters' singular brand of music on the Festival Stage.

This is as it should be, and sometimes it all works. The disjointed sounds become a harmonious blend with an upbeat message: That this festival can somehow manage the crazy balance to provide something for nearly everyone.
