With a stack of magazines and some glue sticks, Cat Palmer was determined to make people's dreams come true Thursday at the Utah Arts Festival.

The Salt Lake City photographer/artist is one of several artists teaching workshops at this year's festival — a chance for people to get up close and personal with an artist, try their hand at art themselves.

In a quiet room upstairs in the City Library, Palmer showed her students how to make "vision boards," collages that represent a person's hopes and aspirations in health, relationships, personal reputation and wellbeing.

Palmer told her students to "be thinking about your world, and what you want to change." She then sat with them and thumbed through magazines, looking for images that represent those changes.

"Don't limit yourself with what you want to dream," Palmer said. "You're going to tell the universe what you want, and acting like those are really happening."

The "vision boards" are a simplified version of Palmer's visual style, which often incorporates her photographs in a collage of images and text.

Workshops are scheduled all weekend at the Utah Arts Festival, in visual, literary and performing arts. Registration is limited for some, and a materials fee may sometimes apply. Go to the festival website for details.
