The moviemaking business is picking up in Utah. First came news that Steven Seagal is filming an action movie in Salt Lake City, and now director Rob Reiner is slated to start production on a movie in April.
Reiner will direct the independent feature "Being Charlie," from a script by his son Nick, in Utah, the Utah Film Commission announced Thursday afternoon.
The production received approval for the maximum tax incentive — $265,494, or 25 percent of what the production will spend in Utah — from the Governor's Office of Economic Development under the state's Motion Picture Incentive Program.
"The state's professional top-notch crews and artists, its world class infrastructure and the warmth of its people all make it one of my favorite locations to shoot," said producer Lucas Jarach, who brought the 2011 Billy Zane/Sharon Stone action movie "Border Run" to Utah.
Reiner, of course, is known for making such classic films as "This Is Spinal Tap," "Stand By Me," "Misery," "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally...," and "A Few Good Men."
The GOED board also approved $302,906 in incentive money for two more seasons of BYUtv's series "American Ride."
