Simon Beck is stomping around in the snow at Summit Powder Mountain, making art before the next snowstorm blows it away.

Beck is a British artist whose medium is large, untouched snowfields. His tools are a compass and a pair of snowshoes.

As detailed Monday on the public-radio news program "The World," Beck uses his orienteering skills to walk on the snow in his snowshoes, creating a pattern in the snow. Sometimes the patterns are geometric, other times a drawing of a particular object. He then will fill in those patterns, walking back and forth in the snow.

The images are only visible from above, and are gone when the snow melts or is covered by a new snowfall.

Beck travels widely creating his art, and is working this week as artist-in-residence at Summit Powder Mountain, the ski community in Weber County, near Eden.
