Here's what is happening in pop culture, besides the Oscar nominations:

• James Cameron is delaying the first sequel to "Avatar" until 2017, at the earliest — because writing three sequels at once is hard, guys. [Vulture]

• Another delayed movie: Ron Howard's whaling adventure "In the Heart of the Sea," originally set to open March 13, will now open on Dec. 11. [The Hollywood Reporter]

• The season premiere of "Game of Thrones" will get a theatrical treatment, opening Jan. 29 on IMAX theaters around the country (but, unfortunately, none in Utah). [Entertainment Weekly]
