The original nerd-rock band is bringing back one of its most innovative music-distribution outlets — taking it online and on the road.

They Might Be Giants, the Brooklyn-based rock duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, is relaunching its Dial-A-Song service. Originally, the band would put a new recording on a phone-answering machine, and anyone willing to call the number could hear the results.

Starting Jan. 5, the band will relaunch the Dial-A-Song program, with a new song posted online every Monday night — 52 songs over 52 weeks.

In conjunction with the relaunch, They Might Be Giants will hit the road next spring with the Dial-A-Song Across America tour. One of the tour stops is Salt Lake City: Tuesday, May 5, at The Depot, 400 W. South Temple.

Tickets for TMBG's Salt Lake City show — $21 in advance; $25 on the day of the show — go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at Smith's Tix.
