BYU football: Former Jordan High QB Austin Kafentzis is now a Cougar

BYU's quarterback room will be crowded this fall.

In a major surprise, the Cougars have added former Jordan High quarterback Austin Kafentzis to their football roster. A sophomore, Kafentzis has three years of eligibility remaining after beginning his college career at Wisconsin, then transferring to Nevada and then Arizona Western College.

BYU did not officially announce Kafentzis' signing, and it is unknown whether he will be on scholarship or a walk-on. However, the former two-time Utah Gatorade Player of the Year is enrolled in school at BYU for the spring semester, which began this week.

Media members who cover BYU are forbidden from contacting players without first going through the athletic department's sports information office, and "newcomers" are generally off limits to reporters until after the first game of the season.

BYU's list of quarterbacks now includes the following:

* Junior starter Tanner Mangum

* Redshirt sophomore Beau Hoge

* Redshirt sophomore Koy Detmer Jr.

* Walk-on senior Young Tanner

* Freshman returned missionary Kody Wilstead

Also, Joe Critchlow, who signed with Southern Utah out of high school in Tennessee but signed with BYU last February, returns from his church mission in July and is also expected to participate in fall camp.

Kafentzis was also a record-setting javelin thrower for high school track team and could join the BYU track team down the road. He didn't play much for Arizona Western last fall as the Matadors went 11-1 with two other QBs ahead of him on the depth chart. Kafentzis completed four passes for 15 yards.

BYU's newly released roster, which can be found here, also includes returned missionary Motekiai Langi, the 400-plus pounder from Tonga who drew national headlines in February of 2015 when he signed with BYU despite never having played organized football. Langi is listed as a 6-foot-7, 410-pound defensive lineman.

Defensive lineman Sione Takitaki, who missed the entire 2016 season for reasons never disclosed publicly, is back on the lineup. However, another defensive standout from 2016, Tomasi Laulile, is not on the roster.
