Elsie Mahe, daughter of BYU running backs coach Reno Mahe, is showing signs of improvement but still has a long way to go, a family spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Mahe, 3, was recovering at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City on Tuesday morning after suffering a horrible accident at the family's home in Lehi. One of the Mahe's seven children, the toddler needed to be life-flighted after a 4-year-old friend discovered her tangled up in the cord of a mini-blind.

Her mother, Sunny Mahe, a former BYU volleyball star, performed CPR until emergency medical technicians arrived.

"They have taken her off sedation," family friend Jeremy Roberts said via text message midday Wednesday. "Her heart rate has decreased and she seems to be doing better. It was a very good night. She still isn't responsive, but the doctors have told us they didn't anticipate her to be."

Later Wednesday, Roberts posted on the GoFundMe web page that has been set up to help the Mahe family with medical expenses that the next major hurdle for Elsie to accomplish is to wake up.

"No longer being sedated, and breathing on her own, she has responded to pinching and to her parents' voices," Roberts wrote. "We will know more in the next 24 hours."

The GoFundMe account is entitled "Help the Mahe Family" and can be found by going here.
