It appears that BYU basketball coaches are going to have to wait five more months to sign highly recruited guard Christian Popoola, a 6-foot-4 standout at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas.

Popoola, a 185-pound combo guard, committed to BYU coaches in August, and was seen as a huge get for coach Dave Rose's program.

The early signing period for basketball, which started last week, ends today (Nov. 16). As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, BYU had not announced any new signings. The Cougars play host to Coppin State on Thursday night at the Marriott Center.

Popoola said Tuesday night via telephone that he probably will not sign early, but wasn't entirely certain.

What's the hangup?

Popoola isn't saying.

"I don't think I am supposed to talk about it yet, but nothing [strange] is really going on here," he said. "I just haven't signed yet."

Asked if he still planned to sign with BYU, he said: "Yes, definitely."

The next signing period for Division I basketball recruits begins April 12, 2017 and runs through May 7.

Asked if he knew the next signing period isn't until April, he said: "Yeah, I might sign later."

Asked why he is waiting, he said: "That's the thing I am not supposed to disclose yet. I am just trying to figure things out, honestly."

Finally, I asked Popoola if BYU fans should be freaking out because he hasn't put pen to paper yet.

"No," he said. "I am definitely a Cougar. That's not the problem at all."

Several college basketball recruiting experts told The Tribune Wednesday that Popoola's wavering is not unexpected, given how he started his prep career at Bishop Gorman, then transferred to Lone Peak for his sophomore season, then transferred back to Bishop Gorman for his junior season. He helped lead the Gaels to a state championship last spring.

He's also switched club teams several times the past few years.

Last Thursday, BYU announced the signing of Kolby Lee, a 6-foot-9 forward from Meridian, Idaho. Lee plans to go on an LDS Church mission before enrolling.

Turns out, the Rocky Mountain High senior might be the only player to sign with the Cougars from the class of 2017. At least until April.
