Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer was obviously the big draw at BYU's press briefing Tuesday afternoon as the Cougars rolled out the three new assistant coaches that Kalani Sitake has brought to his staff.

Detmer said he's up to the task of being the offensive coordinator in his first college coaching gig, as you can read here. He also talked about his relationship with Tanner Mangum and Taysom Hill, and his preparedness level to face the scrutiny that will certainly come.

New defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki and assistant head coach Ed Lamb also fielded questions at the media event that drew roughly 30 people.

Following is information and quotes from Tuiaki's 12-minute interview. I'll have more from Lamb, the former SUU coach, tomorrow.

First, Tuiaki's first name is pronounced: EE-LYE-Suh. He's clearly going to be one of the more quotable coaches on the staff, that much is already evident.

"Just don't call me a bad word, and we will be good," he said.

Tuiaki prepped at nearby Timpview High and said he's always been a "BYU guy" although he's coached at Utah, Utah State and Oregon State. He's had a few classmates from Timpview reach out to him on social media since the news of his hiring became public.

"I grew up a BYU guy," he said. "My dad went to school here and played rugby. He played rugby here with Dave Smyth, the head rugby coach, so I grew up right across the street and ran out here as a little kid when little kids could still run around at that time, and came to the stadium when it was really noisy. I grew up here — I've always been a BYU guy, and just as life takes you to different places, I am really excited to be back to my roots, where I grew up."

Tuiaki said it was difficult to leave coach Gary Andersen's staff at OSU, but has been lifelong friends with Sitake and couldn't pass up the opportunity to be a defensive coordinator.

"Obviously, Kalani is my guy. It is hard to turn the guy down. I have the utmost respect for Gary Andersen. He has helped me a lot as well. It was difficult because I was leaving Gary, but at the same time I was staying with a guy I trust and want to deal with. So to me, it was a win-win situation," he said. "…It is still setting in. So I get up in the morning and get ready and look in the mirror and OOOH, I am wearing this [blue] shirt. So, I am excited. But I think it is still kinda setting in."

Tuiaki played at Snow College and SUU. BYU didn't recruit him "because I just wasn't good enough to play here." He said he always followed BYU "through all the many years I've been playing, through high school and college, as well as teaching at a high school [Kearns] and coaching in college."

Tuiaki said what defensive scheme the Cougars will employ in 2016 "is still kinda in the making, but as you guys know, the recruiting the last 10 or 11 years has been for a 3-4, or a 3-3-5, so we just got to make sure that we do what is best of the kids, and what the kids do well. We've got different ideas, as far as doing a little bit of both, but the next step is still kinda up in the air as far as doing what is best for the kids. I feel that is the most important part."

Lamb, Tuiaki and Detmer all mentioned a meeting held Tuesday morning and how Sitake addressed the team, and quickly earned some respect. In what was probably the understatement of the day, Tuiaki said the new coach isn't real similar to the old coach.

"I think it was a good meeting," Tuiaki said. "It was very simple. It wasn't long. They kinda got a taste of what Kalani is like. He is a laid-back, good person. I am sure that they have been used to how Bronco was, but Kalani is just a little different, I think is the best way to put it. And it is a good thing. I think everybody has accepted the change and they are excited and we are ready to move forward with it."

Here's more form Tuiaki today:

On the 2016 schedule: "I knew about the schedule before Kalani even came, so like I said, I followed BYU and was interested in who was playing who, and all that. I am very excited about the schedule."

On what he wants his defense to be known for:

"I believe that there have been a lot of great defenses that have played here in the last several years, as well as in the past. I just want to continue to build off of that and make sure the kids are playing hard and build off what has been here."

On what they've tried to do recruiting wise last few weeks:

"Obviously, I can't talk much about recruits and all that. But we are just trying to get after the best players who we think are a good fit for BYU."

On what their recruiting pitch is:

"Every kid is a little bit different, as far as what they are looking for and what the fit is going to be. The pitch is trying to personalize it for each kid and make sure this is the right fit for them. To be honest with you, some kids, at the end of a few weeks, we realize it and say, you know what? it is not the right fit for him or for us. You just have to do what is right for the kid, even if he ends up going somewhere else.

We are trying to do what is right for the players and trying to get the best fit.

Coach Sitake has talked a lot about recruiting and we will go against anybody, and go and get the kids that we want, and that will fit in here. No matter who is recruiting them, we will go after them."

On the talent on the existing BYU roster:

'Watched a little bit of film, and I am excited that we've got some good talent. I think we've got kids who played hard, which is a tribute to what Bronco [Mendenhall] has done, in all the time he's been here, as well as the kids. The kids have bought into the program and institution and are doing it the right way. So I am excited about the talent that is on the team."

On being excited about meeting Ty Detmer:

"I am still starstruck, man. I look at him, and I am still a fan, and it is awesome to be around a legend like that, really really cool. And he's a great person, which also adds to it."

On whether they will keep most of the guys who have already committed:

"We are working through some things, and doing what we think is the best thing for the program. All of that goes through our head guy, and he makes those decisions. But we have to do what we feel is the best thing for the program as we recruit kids and work through it with them."

On the staff so far:

"There are no egos, and it is a good experience, and there is a Heisman Trophy winner. That's always good. I think it is a good group and I didn't really know Ty and Ed coming into this thing. I kind of knew of Ty. I knew Ed, just bumping into him at the All-Poly camp and stuff like that. I am excited to work with them."

On where they are preparation wise:

"Kalani has done a good job, with our meeting this morning, of just getting these guys set up academically, to make sure they are in their classes, and have their schedules and all that stuff. They will start lifting, I believe, next week.

We will have a good offseason workout before we get to spring ball."

On what position he will coach:

"That's kind of still up in the air. I will coach a position, but we are still working on that."

On how soon he wants his defensive staff intact:

"As soon as possible, but I don't want to put a deadline to it. We just want to make sure it is the right fit, and the right guy."

On who is making defensive coaching decisions:

'It is a collaborative thing. We are working together on it."

On whether he will coach from press box or field:

'That's still up in the air. I think I can do either/or. We will do what is best for what we think after we put the staff together. But that's for later on, down the road decision."

On how much control Kalani will give him:

"That is still being worked through as well. I think I will be a fool to not lean on him, being a first-time coordinator, with all the success he's had in the past years. I am going to lean on him heavily, and we will work through who calls plays and all that stuff. But he will be involved heavily with the defense."

On the vision for down the road of what defense should look like:

"I think that you've got to be flexible enough that you are doing what ever the kids can do. So, if it ends up being a 4-3, then great. If it ends up being a 3-4, then no problem. We just got to make sure we do the best thing for the kids, and what fits their skill set."

On whether he thought Kalani would be a head coach some day:

"Absolutely, absolutely. He's a good man, he's a good leader, a good motivator. He has a good influence on kids and cares about the kids. There is absolutely no question in my mind."

On being a part of a young staff like this:

"Yeah, no about. It is an exciting time, and change is an exciting time. We will see what the future has, but it is definitely an exciting time for all of us."
