In what I hope becomes a Friday afternoon tradition this season, it's time to clear out the ol' notebook from the week that was in BYU football.

Here are a few notes and quotes from the week, newsy items that might have gone unmentioned in my weekly coverage:

* Receiver Mitch Mathews told me during photo day on Wednesday that he expects to be back practicing full-time next week, after having sat out this week with a "regular inquinal hernia," as opposed to a sports hernia.

"Just a random, bad luck type of thing, which has kept me out of workouts for the week," Mathews said. "I have been out a total of 2 1/2 weeks, and I am already sprinting, so I am ahead of schedule. Things will be good to go by next week, and no worries for the first game."

* Ever quotable, Mathews added his description to the many others regarding what went on in practice Tuesday when BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall halted scrimmages twice and made the players go through some intense conditioning sessions.

"What happened in the bowl game last year — it is over and done with — but it is something that there was kind of some scuffles and fights in practice, and it is something we don't want to bring back ever again. It was kind of an embarrassment to us. We have all gotten past it, but it is kind of a disciplinary thing that was needed. All of us are upset about what happened yesterday. It was one of those things that we learn from and it really hit home. Remember where you came from. That's where we were at the bowl game and we are a lot farther along now. So don't look back. I guess that's where we are now."

* Said defensive end Remington Peck: "Basically, ever since the fight in Miami, there is a zero-tolerance fight policy. It is going to be like that from now on, is what it sounds like. If stuff like that happens again, there will be punishment for it."

Peck told me that the players know who will be suspended due to the brawl against Memphis after the bowl game, "just because we realize who was involved." However, he said there's been no official announcement from the coaches or anything like that. "We just know because we've talked to the guys in the locker room," he said.

* Radio reporter/blogger Mitch Harper asked Mendenhall on Wednesday whether any decisions and suspensions from the bowl game brawl will be announced soon.

"Those decisions were made a long time ago, and I don't intend to address it publicly, at least until game week," Mendenhall said, reiterating what he said several times during spring camp and again on media day in June.

Based on conversations with several players, I am predicting that four players will be suspended for one game (the Nebraska game) due to the brawl. It sounds like three others, including linebacker Sione Takitaki, whose one-game suspension was announced Wednesday, will be suspended a game for honor code missteps during the offseason.

* Immediately after Harper's question for Mendenhall, I asked the coach whether BYU has cut ties with Charles West, the troubled running back from Texas who signed in February.

"No," Mendenhall said. "We are hopeful of Charles joining us, pending everything getting cleared up, which is it looks like that has happened, in January. So we would like to consider him for next season."

* Defensive back Garrett Juergens suffered a fractured clavicle in practice Wednesday. BYU officials did not say how long Juergens is expected to be out.

* Mendenhall on the cornerbacks: "[Jordan Preator] steps positively every day. I like the way he is playing. Maybe even more impressive right now is Michael Davis. He's done a really nice job. And Michael Shelton. So between those three, early on because Micah Hanneman hasn't practiced yet, early on I like what I've seen from all three of them."

* Mendenhall Wednesday on the rugby-style punting that Jonny Linehan and Rhett Almond are trying to master during camp: "Mixed bag, so far, from what I've seen in camp. Today was a good day. So, we are probably two and two right now. Two good days and two inconsistent days. Time will tell on that. Huge decision when field position is at stake, which means wins are at stake. And so yeah, we will be watching that closely."

* Mendenhall on who the leaders are on defense: "I think it is emerging right now. There are a number of leaders. I don't think there is A leader. Bronson [Kaufusi] would be one of them. Harvey Langi would be one of them. Kai Nacua would be one of them. Those players are probably, and maybe Sae Tautu. It is more by committee right now defensively, while Taysom [Hill] is offensively."

* Mendenhall on what happened to Taylor Parker, punter, after he left spring No. 1 on depth chart: "So there was an informal competition and charting that went on during the summer, and that's what determined the players who got into the 105. So that doesn't mean other kickers or punters won't be joining us when school starts, but the charting indicated the most consistent players for the summer, and those were the ones who were invited to fall camp."
