On Wednesday, Feb. 15, Salt Lake City will introduce a one-of-a-kind digital tool that may encourage residents to grow more of their own food.

The Community Food Production Mapping Tool – the first of its kind in the nation – will allow residents to access a City map, click on their property and find out how much food they could grow.

The purpose of the mapping tool is to provide residents with an estimation of how much they could supplement the produce they buy with food grown in their gardens. The tool was developed by Salt Lake City GIS Coordinator Kevin Bell and University of Utah Department of City and Metropolitan Planning students.

Tom Call, who is the new chef for the Trio Restaurant Group, has been quietly working behind the scenes for several months.

But he hit my radar last week as one of the contestants in a local culinary competition called 'Chef War." He won the event by creatively using bacon in a salad; a basil pesto over salmon and with pork loin.

A graduate of the California Culinary Academy, Call interned in Italy and has worked the past 10 years in some of San Francisco’s top-rated restaurants including Campton Place, Aqua, One Market and Coi.

Forget the fashionable clothes and shoes at Nordstrom, I’m wondering if I can get great salad (like I used to) at the new store opening soon in the new City Creek Center.

John Clem, Nordstrom’s vice president of restaurants, told me that I will.

In fact, there are eight salads on the menu at the new Sixth and Pine restaurant inside the downtown store, which will open on Thursday, March 22 along with the rest of the glitzy mall.

Besides salads, the restaurant will offer breakfast (all day), soups, hot and cold sandwiches and classic diner fare such as roasted chicken, fish and chips...

Elder Brett, a new barrel-aged beer, was released last week into the cold cases at Salt Lake City's Epic Brewing Co.

The new brew, which features a Mormon Missionary on the label, clearly pokes fun at the predominant religion of Utah.

But it also pays homage to the wild yeast that was used to make the beer. Brettanomyces — or Brett for short — is the same yeast used by many winemakers to create complexity and character in red wines.

Epic’s Head brewer, Kevin Crompton, made the new brew in collaboration with Chad Yokabson, the owner/head brewer at Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado. Yo...
