University of Utah athletic events are headed for a future with more transparency.

Starting July 1, 2018, a mandatory clear bag policy will be phased into all Utah events at both Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Huntsman Center. Starting this fall, however, fans are encouraged to start complying with the new policy as soon as possible to get up to speed with the change.

According to a release from the university, the policy change has been passed due to "several recent security breaches involving venues for large events around the globe."

"This proactive measure will enhance security inside and outside of the athletic venues and speed up the security screening process for all fans," University of Utah's Chief of Police Dale Brophy said in a release from the school. "Security staff will be checking bags, which mean shorter lines, fewer hassles, more time in the venue enjoying your favorite sport(s) and a greater sense of security."

The new policy states each fan entering may carry one clear bag no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches or a one-gallon-sized plastic freezer bag. Small clutches and purses still are allowed under the changes. The policy states diaper bags also may be taken into venues with accompanying children. Seat cushions without pockets or compartments also still will be allowed in.

In a video posted on the Utah Athletics Twitter account July 20, Utah's athletic director Chris Hill explains why the new policy will be implemented.

Utah is the latest institution to adopt the clear bag policy. Arizona State University is another member of the Pac-12 Conference that has utilized the new process. Schools in the Southeastern Conference also have adopted the clear bag policy.

"The 2017-18 season will be an educational year for our fans," Brophy said. "We will have stadium and arena security staff members at every event talking to fans to notify them of this change. Separate gates at all points of entry will be available for early adopters.

"Those with a clear bag, a small clutch, a blanket with no contents and seat cushions without pockets, will be able to, in essence, skip the lines and will be enjoying the venues without the wait."
