The LDS Church has donated 32 tons of food to aid hundreds of thousands of Peruvians left destitute by torrential spring rains and flooding in the northern region of Piura.
The contribution made by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes boxes of water, tuna, beans, evaporated milk, rice, noodles and oil, along with plastic to waterproof roofing, the Utah-based faith reported.
"I am grateful for this help from the Mormon church in these difficult times for Peruvians. Not only Piura has been affected by the rains, but also other regions such as Lambayeque, La Libertad, Tumbes and Ancash, " stated Nancy Lange, wife of the Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
Flooding and mudslides reportedly had killed more than 100 people and destroyed much of the region's bridge and road infrastructure.
Peru's government has stressed that continued international aid — especially bottled water, canned food, tents, toilet paper, medicines and other basic goods — will be needed well into the summer.
