KUED's documentary "Splinters of a Nation" (8 p.m., Ch. 7) recalls a chapter of Utah history that most present-day residents of the state know little or nothing about.

For more than three years during World War II, about 8,000 German prisoners of war were housed in the state. They worked on farms and factories in different parts of the state. And Utahns got a close look at the enemy.

And writer/director G. Scott Porter's documentary gives us a look back at a fascinating and sometimes horrifying time in the state's history.

Utah was the site of an appalling atrocity. An American soldier — later thought to be mentally ill — opened fire with a machine gun on sleeping German prisoners in Salina, killing nine and wounding 19.

If you've ever visited the Fort Douglas cemetery, you may have wondered why there are German soldiers buried there. This is why.

"Splinters" is a bit talkie — somewhat dominated by talking heads — but the former prisoners, those who interacted with them and historians have a lot to say. It's very interesting stuff.

• Also tonight, it's the premiere of "Man With a Plan" (7:30 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2). Matt LeBlanc stars in this really lame new sitcom as a husband and father who's forced to take on more responsibility for his kids when his wife goes back to work. Ugh. It's painfully bad.
