The first week of the season confirmed how top-heavy the local high school football landscape is this year. There are clear frontrunners in each classification, and those teams thoroughly whipped their competition this past Friday.

The top 14 teams remain the same in the second installment of the statewide top 25, but that doesn't mean there aren't question marks hovering over those programs. Sixth-ranked Jordan was outplayed in the second half in its 28-21 win against then-ranked No. 17 Desert Hills — which fell four spots this week — after claiming a commanding three-score lead at intermission.

No. 8 Davis also jumped out to an early lead, but failed to put away an inferior Clearfield program. No. 13 West Jordan avenged last season's loss against Class 3A's Juan Diego, but it was a battle the entire night. The Soaring Eagle will compete for a title in their classification once again, but the Jaguars, as a much larger program on the rise, should have left little doubt.

No. 16 Olympus and No. 17 Sky View are the biggest risers this week, each ascending three spots up the rankings. No. 23 Corner Canyon suffered the largest drop, by five spots, after failing to assure the offense improved from last year. The Thunder, as previously mentioned, and No. 18 Brighton, which slid three spots, were the other teams to fall.

No. 20 Lehi and No. 25 Woods Cross are the two newcomers to the rankings this week.

There are six ranked-ranked games in Week 2:

No. 4 Herriman at No. 1 Bingham

No. 6 Jordan at No. 10 Roy

No. 11 Fremont at No. 18 Brighton

No. 16 Olympus at No. 12 Highland

Classification power rankings:

CLASS 5A

1. Bingham (1-0) — Thoroughly dominated Westlake. The next two weeks the Miners will tangle in heavyweight fights against Herriman and Lone Peak.

2. Lone Peak (1-0) — Easily dispatched Bountiful on the road.

3. Herriman (1-0) — The Mustangs, true to their reputation, gradually wore down Brighton after a slow start.

4. Jordan (1-0) — Jumped out to an early three-score lead, but failed to keep the foot on the gas against Desert Hills.

5. Davis (1-0) — The Darts won by 17 points, but realistically should have beat Clearfield by much more.

CLASS 4A

1. East (1-0) — Humiliated Syracuse to the tone of 67 points. This team has a chance to be special.

2. Timpview (1-0) — After blanking West in the season opener for the second consecutive year, the Thunderbirds head to California to face Helix, the alma mater of Alex Smith and Reggie Bush.

3. Alta (1-0) — The Hawks showcased their explosive offense, with Will Dana throwing five touchdown passes.

4. Highland (1-0) — Convincing win against Mountain Crest sets up huge battle against Olympus.

5. Springville (1-0) — Made the trek to St. George and handled Dixie.

CLASS 3AA

1. Desert Hills (0-1) — Lost to Class 5A's Jordan on the road, but the Thunder demonstrated their elite ability in the trenches.

2. Dixie (0-1) — Also lost to a program in a higher classification. The road doesn't get easier with a trip to Lone Peak next week.

3. Ridgeline (0-1) — Looked out-of-sync against Skyridge. With Levani Damuni injured, the RiverHawks have serious issues on offense.

4. Pine View (1-0) — The Panthers looked impressive against Judge, with their vaunted defense stealing the show.

5. Tooele (1-0) — Had little trouble with North Sanpete.

CLASS 3A

1. Juan Diego (0-1) — Lost a close game against Class 5A's West Jordan, which is expected to compete in Region 3 this year. The Soaring Eagle are in solid shape.

2. Juab (1-0) — Routed Millard by 35 points. The Wasps appear to have another offense capable of scoring in bunches.

3. Morgan (0-1) — After getting blanked against Bear River, there are serious question marks about this team.

4. Grantsville (1-0) — Defeated Class 4A's Cyprus in a defensive struggle.

5. Manti (1-0) — Destroyed Carbon 42-0 to set up a primetime meeting against Juan Diego at home next week.

CLASS 2A

1. Beaver (1-0) — Reigning champs started the season with an impressive win against Class 3A's Canyon View.

2. South Summit (1-0) — Never overlook the Wildcats. Started the season ranked No. 4 and promptly knocked off top-ranked San Juan.

3. San Juan (0-1) — Struggled to contain South Summit's passing attack.

4. Summit Academy (1-0) — Expected to be strong offensively this season, but the Bears held Emery to seven points on defense.

5. North Summit (0-1) — Was it an anomaly, or is there serious concern for the Braves after the loss against Layton Christian?

CLASS 1A

1. Kanab (1-0) — After heartbreaks the past couple of seasons, the Cowboys look to be a team on a mission, especially after a 41-0 win to open the year.

2. Duchesne (1-0) — Strong win against Milford.

3. Rich (0-0) — After the first-week bye, Rich opens against Bear Lake (Idaho).

4. Diamond Ranch (0-1) — Long winning streak snapped against Enterprise.

5. Layton Christian (1-0) — Huge upset against North Summit has the Eagles in the rankings.
