Sundance picks 3 projects for VR residency

Four creators of virtual-reality projects have been chosen for support from the Sundance Institute.

The three projects will join the Sundance Institute | Jaunt VR Residency Program, a six-month program the institute says is "designed to empower artists on the cutting edge of storytelling."

The artists chosen will receive grants to make their VR short films, as well as post-production support. As part of the program, Jaunt VR also provides access to the company's professional cinematic VR camera, Jaunt One, and Jaunt Cloud Services, including cloud-based stitching and rendering.

The three projects chosen for the residency are:

• "Chilled Soba," by artist Daniel Arsham, which starts with a trip to Tokyo's iconic Shibuya Crossing, covering themes of time travel and natural disaster.

• "LOOK 2," in which artist and rapper Yung Jake, master of many digital forms, brings his mind-bending aesthetic to an experimental music video that melds rap to VR.

• "Through You," a love story by filmmaker/dancer Lily Baldwin and director/writer Saschka Unseld, exploring love, rage, passion and mortality in a story that spans from the early 1970s to the late 1980s.
