Salt Lake City native Gary Andersen made recruiting in-roads in Utah with his first class of Oregon State football signees, and the Beavers' coach is trying to build more ties to the state. OSU is partnering with Southern Utah University in staging a satellite camp June 17 at Alta High School in Sandy – where Alema Te'o, the longtime director of the All-Poly Camp – is the new coach. Various members of Andersen's staff will work in other camps this summer, as "a very, very important part of recruiting," Andersen said during a Pac-12 coaches teleconference Thursday. "Our concept is to get in front of as many kids as we can." Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, a close friend and former colleague of Andersen's, also endorses satellite camps and philosophically can't oppose the idea, even in the Utes' backyard. "If it's in the structure of the rules, absolutely," Whittingham said. He's in favor of any opportunity for prospective players to be instructed and evaluated, without having to travel to a campus. Members of Whittingham's staff will work in cooperation with Angelo State's staff at two Texas sites, Bedford and Aldine, in June. – Kurt Kragthorpe
