St. George native Andy Stokes has been named to replace Blaine Monkres as the head football coach at Dixie High School, which won the Class 3AA championship last season.

Monkres was recently named offensive coordinator at Dixie State University.

Stokes began coaching at Dixie High in 2008 and has been the offensive line coach in 2011, helping the Flyers win two state championships and one region title. He has been teaching at Dixie since 2013.

"We are excited to continue the strong tradition of Dixie High football with Andy," said Dixie athletic director Mike Bair in making the announcement. "He has very good assistant coaches that will assist him where needed. Dixie High will continue to develop young men into upstanding young adults that carry on the traditions of Dixie High."

Bair attended what was then Dixie College and William Penn University, where he majored in psychology and sociology while playing football. He was drafted as a tight end by the New England Patriots in 2005 and later played for the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.

When he returned to St. George, Stokes was a co-owner of the Dixie Rebels, the local semi-pro football team, where he was a player as well as a coach. Andy and his wife Tia also own and operate the Vault Dance Studio where they help to raise money for families in need around St. George.
