Here's what is happening in pop culture:

• The Directors Guild of America picked its nominees for its big awards. For movies, the guild nominated Wes Anderson ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Clint Eastwood ("American Sniper"), Alejandro Iñárritu ("Birdman"), Richard Linklater ("Boyhood") and Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game"). The biggest snub: Ava DuVernay for "Selma." [Entertainment Weekly]

• Another snubbed director, "Gone Girl's" David Fincher, is moving on — reteaming with star Ben Affleck and screenwriter Gillian Flynn on "Strangers," a remake of the classic "Strangers on a Train." [Deadline]

• Why did box-office numbers decline in 2014? A survey says 53 percent of the public thinks movie tickets are too expensive, while 41 percent said movies were less interesting in 2014. [The Hollywood Reporter]
