Food briefs: Site helps kids do the math on fruits, veggies

A colorful, new interactive Web site, designed to educate children ages 2 through 8 about the importance of fruits and vegetables, is now operating at http://www.foodchamps.org. Once on the site, children can play fruit and vegetable math, test their skills in a matching game and even print out recipes to cook with an adult. They also can print pages to color.

Chick-fil-A operators drive off with prizes

Three franchise operators of Chick-fil-A restaurants in Utah will get new Ford automobiles after receiving the company's Symbol of Success Award, which recognizes operators who achieve aggressive sales goals.

Craig Saxton, of the Layton Hills Mall store, and Terry Crook, from University Mall in Provo, received the award for the first time and will get the keys to a vehicle for one year.

Becky Pickle, the operator of the store at Fashion Place Mall in Murray, has received the award for a second consecutive year, which means she gets the title to her car.

Halibut season is here; quotas could hike prices

Fresh picked peaches and vine-ripe tomatoes are still months away, but there is one food that can be eaten fresh in March - Pacific halibut. Fishermen began catching this delicate-tasting fish earlier this month. The season will remain open until mid-November.

Prices tend to be high at the beginning of the season but will level off. They likely will climb again near the end of the season.

Halibut prices may also be higher this year because the quotas, which mandate how many fish can be taken during the season, have been reduced. The 2008 Pacific halibut quota, set by the International Pacific Halibut Commission, is 59.2 million pounds, down 9 percent from 2007.

Native plant discussion at Sugar House Park

The Utah Associated Garden Club hosts a free Wildflower/Native Plant Symposium Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Garden Center Building in Sugar House Park. Speakers will be Paul Zuckerman, Susan Meyer and June Openshaw. Topics include Wasatch wildflowers and using native plants in home gardens.

Sprinkle of hog heaven

For those who like everything about bacon - except the fat - there's Bacon Salt. Sprinkle this new vegetarian, kosher and calorie-free seasoning on everything from baked potatoes to pasta. A 2.75-ounce bottle costs about $4 and comes in original, hickory and peppered flavors.
