On Tuesday, the Utah Watercolor society hosts a lecture and demonstration by Carl Purcell, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and former chairman of the Snow College art department. MFA show: MFA candidate McGarren Flack will present work Wednesday to March 21 at the University of Utah's Alvin Gittins Gallery. Flack, whose work is largely focused on bricks and figures, and whose exhibition is titled "Salt and Mortar," will also hold an opening reception and give a lecture about his work on Wednesday at 6 p.m in Room 158 of the gallery, 375 S. 1530 East, Salt Lake City. Nobility in mobility: The Twain Tippetts Gallery in the Chase Fine Arts Center at Utah State University, 1110 E. 610 North, Logan, will display the work of MFA candidate Scott Nelson Foster beginning Monday, with a closing reception Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Foster spent three years painting in mobile-home parks, and his oil and watercolor paintings chronicle subtle changes in trailer-park landscapes. First solo in Utah: The Julie Nester Gallery, 1755 B Bonanza Drive, Park City, opens a new exhibition of paintings by Santa Fe abstract painter Rob Douglas on Friday, with an artist's reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Douglas uses controlled dripping, hand-made tools and acrylic paint combined with raw pigments, marble dust, chalk and charcoal. Graffiti quilt: In celebration of Black History Month, the Brigham Young University Museum of Fine Art has unveiled a new acquistion for its permanent collection, "The Faith Ringgold Story Quilt," or "Subway Graffiti #3," on display in the museum's Lied Gallery, North Campus Drive, Provo. Ringgold's career began in the 1960s with political oil paintings evocative of the civil-rights movement. In the 1980s, after experimenting with other media, she turned to story quilts, which have been the primary focus of her career. Residency program: The University of Utah College of Fine Arts will use a $1 million gift from John and Marva Warnock to establish an endowed residency program bearing their name. Unlike many guest-artist programs, the Warnock Residency will offer visiting artists appointments of one to two years and is designed to attract rising stars in the art world. Marva Warnock serves on the National Leadership Council for the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and John Warnock is co-chairman of the board of directors of Adobe Systems Inc., which he co-founded in 1982. Utahns along Highway 89: The exhibition of John Telford's "People, Places and Things Along US-89" opens at the Rio Gallery, 300 S. 455 West, Salt Lake City, Friday and runs through April 12. The exhibition comprises 60 photographs documenting life along Highway 89 in Utah and is the first time the collection will be on view in its entirety.
