Light & shadow: "Night & Day," an exhibition exploring the contrast between darkness and daylight, opens Friday with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at Horne Fine Art, 142 E. 800 South, Salt Lake City. The show features paintings by Ken Baxter, Karen Horne, Phyllis F. Horne and Judith Mehr. The artists observed Utah scenes in the clarity of sunlight and by the romantic glow of streetlights or the glare of neon. At the core of the exhibition are a series of works by Karen Horne capturing the distinctive skyline of the Salt Lake City & County Building at different times of day. Other paintings capture scenes of the Main Street TRAX line, the 9th and 9th district and the Market Street Broiler. The show continues through Dec. 22. For more information, call 801-533-4200 or visit www.hornefineart.com.

Twin painters: Joseanne Glass "reinterprets" old black-and-white photographs into colorful acrylic paintings that tell stories from 1950s- and 1960s-era Mexico. Maureen O'Hara Ure has completed a series of mixed-media paintings, many inspired by pre-Renaissance depictions of the Apocalypse and the Last Judgment. Exhibitions of these works by both artists open with a reception Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Finch Lane Gallery of the Art Barn, 54 Finch Lane (about 1400 East), Salt Lake City. Both shows will continue through Dec. 28.

Less is more: Many art collectors search for large paintings or sculptures that make grand statements in their living rooms. But don't the smaller nooks and crannies of a home deserve art, too? Now comes a group show that addresses this very issue. "Less Is More: Artwork for Small Spaces" opens Friday with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Phillips Gallery, 444 E. 200 South, Salt Lake City. The show features smaller works by the gallery's stable of artists and will continue through Dec. 1. For a preview of the artwork, visit www.phillips-gallery.com.

Holiday show: Looking for an artistic Christmas gift? Works in many mediums and styles by 19 artists will be for sale in Art Access' 13th Annual Holiday Exhibition, opening Friday at the nonprofit gallery, 230 S. 500 West #125, Salt Lake City. The show will feature paintings, prints, pottery, glass ornaments, clay angels, fabric purses, Peruvian retablos and more. Also opening Friday at the gallery is an exhibit of drawings by Holly Williams, who uses colored pencil to capture fruit, flowers, vegetables and other growing things. Says Williams, "I layer the colors, as is done with oil painting, so that the objects have depth, intensity and dimension." Both shows continue through Dec. 19, and Art Access will host an opening reception Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Free for all: The Utah Museum of Fine Arts, 410 Campus Center Drive, on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, is offering free admission on Saturday. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.umfa.utah.edu.
