"Public Property," a solo exhibition by South African artist Sean Slemon, is on display through Oct. 10 at the Central Utah Art Center, 86 N. Main St., Ephraim. The show includes a video installation alongside drawing, photography and site-specific artwork to explore the ambivalent relationship between humans and nature. For example, the installation examines how trees have been turned into commodities while remaining natural resources that are in theory available to all. Photo pairings: Brigham Young University is pairing century-old Utah landscape photographs by George Edward Anderson with recent images of the same scenes photographed by University of Utah historian Peter L. Goss.

Anderson traveled Utah between the late 1880s and mid-1920s as a photographer for hire, snapping photos of clients outside with spouses, children, extended family, beloved possessions and surrounding farm buildings. The exhibit juxtaposes 20 images taken by Anderson with 20 similar images shot by Goss nearly 100 years later. The goal in Goss' work was to duplicate, as closely as possible, Anderson's locations, compositions and even the times of year when the photos were taken. "The Rephotography of George Edward Anderson's Environmental Portraits" will be on display through October in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium Gallery on the Provo campus. The gallery will host a reception Tuesday at 5: 30 p.m.

Grandparents welcome: In celebration of National Grandparents Day, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts is offering grandparents free admission to its exhibitions and activities today. Grandparents and grandchildren may check out, free of charge, themed Family Backpacks that will lead them on a treasure hunt throughout the museum or help them to create artwork such as exotic masks, personalized pottery, bead bracelets and more.
