'Waitress'
"Waitress" is like the pies the title character creates: offbeat, a little flaky and as sweet as can be. Writer-director Adrienne Shelly brings a gently offbeat humor to the predicament of lead character Jenna, played by Keri Russell ("Felicity"). She also creates a nicely homespun surrogate family around Jenna, in the form of her crotchety boss (Andy Griffith, who's a better actor than you remember) and her spirited co-workers (played by Shelly and "Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Cheryl Hines).

The Killers
The band hits Salt Lake City Thursday for the second time on its current tour, and word is that it's the band's most theatrical production to date. You be the judge when The Killers visit the Great Saltair in Magna at 8 p.m., with Louis XIV opening. Tickets are $27 at SmithsTix outlets and www.ktix.net.
Paul Newman giving up movies
AFTER 50 YEARS on the big screen, Paul Newman has given up acting. ''I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,'' Newman, 82, told ABC's ''Good Morning America'' this week. Newman will focus on the Dressing Room, his new organic restaurant in Westport, Conn., and his Hole in the Wall Gang camps for critically ill children.
