Good dog! Children's art at SLC precinct

The Salt Lake City Arts Council, in cooperation with the Salt Lake City Police Department and Bad Dog Rediscovers America, invites the public to a new display of children's art in the Community Gallery of the Pioneer Precinct Building at 1040 W. 700 South, Salt Lake City. The artwork is by children in Bad Dog Rediscovers America's after-school arts program and will be displayed through the end of March. For more information, call 801-596-5000.

Photo chat: The Eccles Community Art Center presents "Conversation in Art," featuring local photographer Jon R. Williams, who will review the work of legendary photographers Robert Doisneau, Tina Modotti, Paul Strand and others. The lecture is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at 2580 Jefferson Ave., Ogden. Oh, the "Places" you'll go: "Places," a conceptual art installation by Anne Watson, opens with a reception Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory, 1250 E. 1700 South, on the campus of Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The exhibit is divided into representations of earth and air and includes a video, sculptural puppets, drawings, a painting and various other mediums. It will run through March and can be viewed through the windows of the conservatory from 1700 South.

Watercolor show: The Utah Watercolor Society will present its "Signature and Star Member Show," a juried exhibition of watercolor paintings that opens with an artists' reception Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Patrick Moore Gallery, 511 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City. The gallery will host another reception Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. during Gallery Stroll. At both events, guests will be invited to express their passion for art on notecards that will be posted in the gallery as part of the exhibition.

The show will have a French theme and will include food, music and a series of "Eclectic French Photo Impressionism" images by photographer Don Thorpe. It will be on display through Feb. 7. For more information, call 801-521-5999 or visit http://www.utwatercolor.com.

Gallery stroll: The Salt Lake Gallery Association's monthly Gallery Stroll is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Galleries will stay open late for browsers to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and possibly do some shopping. Maughan talks: Nationally acclaimed illustrator William Maughan will speak about his work Friday at 7 p.m. at the Bountiful/Davis Art Center, 745 S. Main St., Bountiful. Maughan is the director of graduate fine art painting and illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and has been a professional illustrator for more than 30 years. His clients include Avon Books, CBS Television, Cosmopolitan magazine, Danbury Mint, Doubleday & Co., and the Oxford University Press. Maughan will discuss many aspects of contemporary illustration work. His appearance is in conjunction with the Utah Illustrators Invitational show at BDAC through Feb. 9.

Pickle me pink: The Pickle Company announces the opening of a group show featuring new works by Nolan Baumgartner, Todd Christensen and Stephanie Leitch on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pickle Company, 741 S. 400 West, Salt Lake City. Baumgartner creates large figurative sculptures using spray foam insulation and other mixed media; Christensen will exhibit hundreds of small collage works created from book jackets and other mixed media, along with bronze and found-object sculptures; Leitch presents a suspended installation consisting of 60 pounds of honey and 110 glass chemistry funnels.
