This year a new category - culinary art- was added to the performing and visual arts awards, which were given to recipients Wednesday at the mansion, with the culinary award winner providing the event menu. And the winners are:
Performing arts: The Madeleine Choir School, directed by Gregory A. Glenn. Since being founded in 1996 as an after-school program with a handful of students, the Madeleine Choir School - the only co-educational Catholic choir program in the U.S. - now has 200 graduates. The choir has twice been invited to perform in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and gives frequent performances in the Cathedral in Salt Lake City.
Culinary art: Valter Nassi, owner of Cucina Toscana in downtown Salt Lake City. Nassi, who has worked as a restaurateur in Italy, Switzerland, Kenya and New York, first introduced his work to Utahns at Il Sansivino in the American Stores Building. His newest venture, located at 307 W. Pierpont, emphasizes seasonal menus and Utah produce.
On the dinner menu at the Wednesday event: Ravioli al Burro e Tartufo Umbro, handmade spinach and ricotta filled ravioli with a fresh black truffle sauce; Branzino al Vapore, steamed filet of striped bass with lemon and extra virgin olive oil; and Costolettine di Vitello al Forno Scotta Dito, petite veal rack finished with a local, quince apple pulp sauce. He also prepared an extensive antipasto and dessert buffet.
Visual art: Steve Songer, a painter from Huntsville, holds a master's degree in fine art from Utah State University and in the late 1980s, studied at the Royal Academy of Art in London. In addition to his painting, he spent many years as a high school teacher and has served on his city council.
