Previous installments of Bravo Broadway have featured the orchestra playing show-tune arrangements and accompanying a set of singers with deep credentials earned along the Great White Way. All of that is happening this time, but with an important addition: There is dancing too - lots of dancing - in a tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers called "Let's Face the Music and Dance."
Christiane Noll, who performed in Salt Lake City several times before with the Utah Symphony - and in the starring role of Hope Cladwell in the recent tour of musical "Urinetown" - says dancers are a perfect addition to the Bravo Broadway format:
"When the dancing couple is featured, it really features the orchestra too, but also gives you something to look at." Noll said the show evolved from one in which a singing couple and dancing couple alternated through the evening to a more integrated performance.
"Now everyone sings a little, and everyone dances a little. We never just stand up there and just do our thing at the audience. They are included as we tell tidbits of information and little stories between numbers. We kind of like to talk off the cuff."
There can't be much time for chatter, though. The concert's first half is packed with music and dancing from shows that featured Astaire and Rogers, such as "Top Hat" (1935), "Flying Down to Rio" (1933) and "I Won't Dance" (1935). Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern are among composers featured.
The second half is devoted to music of George Gershwin from films and Broadway shows that featured Astaire and Rogers. "Strike Up the Band," "Fascinatin' Rhythm," "Embraceable You" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me" are among the dozen tunes on the song list.
Besides Noll, featured guest artists for the concert are singer Gary Mauer and dancers Gayle Holsman and Jeffry Denman, each a Broadway thoroughbred.
Noll made her Broadway debut starring in "Jekyll and Hyde" as Emma; Mauer played Raoul in the Broadway production of "Phantom of the Opera" and Enjolras in "Les Misérables." He now plays the Phantom in the American touring company of "Phantom of the Opera."
Denman was an original cast member of "The Producers" on Broadway, where he also performed in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Holsman played all of Gene Kelly's leading ladies in the Off-Brodway show "A Salute to Gene Kelly" and Polly Baker in the national tour of "Crazy for You."
With a great song list, a swinging Utah Symphony led by associate conductor Scott O'Neil and a talented band of guest artists, little else is needed to treat the eyes and ears.
Just one question remains.
Will Noll and Holsman take a cue from Ginger Rogers and let the show be, at least partly, about gorgeous evening gowns?
"Oh, you know we will," said Noll with a laugh. "The last concert like this was sort of a contest to see who had more dresses. I think that's half the fun - making it a dress parade."
Judging from program, the male guest artists will look as dapper and classy as Astaire always did, too. One of their selections is "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails."
Give my regards to Broadway
