Visual arts notes: Utah Arts Council brings new members aboard

New board members

The Utah Arts Council has named two new members to its board: Victoria Rowe Berry, director of Utah State University's Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art; and Andrew Yarosh, director of the Moab Music Festival. The Utah Arts Council board of directors is a policy-making board that interprets the statutes guiding the Utah Arts Council; advises on issues pertaining to short and long term planning; conducts program advocacy; and evaluates budget recommendations. Berry and Yarosh bring geographical diversity and lots of experience to the mix.

Wilderness quilt

Artist Trent Alvey writes to promote a new artist/community project: Women Protecting wilderness. The project incorporates more than 150 testimonials with photos, which has been transformed into an art quilt. It's designed to engage people in conversation, and "to protect Utah's wild heritage."

Holiday art and crafts

Homemade and store-bought holiday crafts are on sale at Orem's SCERA Center for the Arts, which includes gift workshops, a student art exhibit and a holiday art sale. On Monday and Thursday afternoons Dec. 1-11, kids (5 and older) can take part in Holiday Art Craze, one hour make-and-take workshops. Cost is $10, which includes all materials, plus hot chocolate and cookies.

Universe City asks local artists for work to sell in a discount show, where all art will sell for $99.95 or less. You know why this is a good thing: The event offers starving artists need support, and consumers get the chance to buy good local stuff for the gift-giving season and beyond.

The Salt Lake Downtown Alliance offers its annual Old World Christmas Market, modeled after European markets, a holiday tradition dating back to the 1300s. Shop at wooden chalets for unique, handmade gifts from local artisans, listen to -- or join in -- Commuter Caroling, and savor flavors of the season, including baked goods, kettle corn, candied nuts and spiced cider.
