Keys to creation

Every piece in the October show at the SCERA Art Studios is a big deal, and not just big. 4 x 8 feet canvas-sized big. What's also out-sized about the Orem studio's "Big Exhibit" is that it features the work of high school students involved in Envision, a program to encourage artistic endeavor in teens. While students were free to create their own image on their large canvases, each was required to incorporate a key, a circle and a number. Look for the signs, while viewing how students have made something out of the most basic of foundations.

When » Opens Oct. 10, with a reception from 6-7 p.m. The exhibit continues through October 31. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays noon-9 p.m.

Altering Landscapes

It's great to see new takes on familiar landscapes, and many galleries are leading the way this fall. "Landscape 2008" is composed of the work of four artists - Gerard Bourgeois, Candice Eisenfeld, Geoff Krueger and John McCormick - whose work ranges from the representational to the abstract. This gallery seems interested in pushing the envelope on what Park City art patrons ought to think of buying.

When » Oct. 10-Nov. 8, with an opening reception from 5-8:30 p.m. Oct. 10. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Lee returns for fundraiser

Former state poet laureate David Lee leads off the Entrada fundraiser on Saturday evening, returning to the state from Texas and the Oregon coast. The recipient of the Utah Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, Lee is the author of "A Legacy of Shadows," "News from Down to the Café" and "Wayburn Pig." He'll be debuting new narrative poems at the Entrada event. Also at the fundraiser, Entrada will present its Ward Roylance award to Bonnie Posselli, a Utah artist known for her depictions of Utah's red rock country.

The mission of the Entrada Institute is to support artists, writers, humanities scholars and earth and social scientists in their development of new works related to the Capitol Reef area. The fundraiser features a silent auction of fine art, textiles, rare and signed books, and more.

Bond. Derek Bond

Utah artist Derek Bond writes (in one of the most thorough press releases received in the newsroom) that he "divides his time between the north coast of California and his family's cattle ranch in Sanpete County" but was recently in New Jersey (EXIT 165) to receive an award of excellence (there were 5 nationally) for his nature and wildlife work by the Artists for Conservation Foundation (ACF). Bond is a self-taught artist who works in egg-tempura, and his piece, "Little Snowy Plover," was awarded the Medal of Excellence at the ACF's 10th anniversary event. That piece and another of his works will hang in the museum's show; benefits donated to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which is based at the Bronx Zoo. Stop by, Derek writes, if you're in Jersey.
