Patxi Shortsleeve

BRIGHTON GOALKEEPER

Season stats: Helped Brighton to a 0.60 goals-against average in the regular season; had seven shutouts this season.

Highlights: Stepped up in the quarterfinal against Fremont, which went to a shootout; even with a broken nose, Shortsleeve helped the Bengals beat Fremont 7-6 in the shootout; made key saves and recorded a shutout in the championship game against Viewmont.

Quote: "He was solid and consistent during the season but stepped it up even more in the state tournament." - Brighton coach Russ Boyer

Favorite sports drink: Cool Blue Gatorade

Favorite fast food: "Anywhere that has a dollar menu."

TV character he most identifies with: Fes from "That 70's Show" because "kids on my club team joke about me being Basque."

CLASS 4A MVP

Jim Allred

BOUNTIFUL DEFENDER

Season stats: Even though he was a defender, he had five goals, making him the third-highest scorer on the team. On top of that, he had about five goal-line deflections when the goalkeeper got pulled out of the box.

Highlights: The only player to score in three of Bountiful's four playoff games. In Bountiful's semifinal game against Springville, Allred gave the Braves a 1-0 lead when he scored off a corner kick.

Quote: "He's a player who plays coast to coast. He literally plays from goal line to goal line. Jim is a man of many trades and excels at them all. He really had an impact in every game." - Bountiful coach Lou Plank

Pre-game ritual: Hugs all of the defenders, starting with Colton Constantino, Chris Byers and Zhaque Budge (in that order).

Song that gets him pumped up: "Nothing but a Good Time" by Poison.

Car he drives: Blue 1989 Honda Civic

CLASS 3A MVP

Highlights: Scored the golden goal in overtime against Uintah to advance to the state championship game. Had a hat trick against Union on March 26.

Quote: "His biggest quality is his instinct to score goals. He is the player who wants to take responsibility on his own. He's a player to make the move to place himself in front of the goal and decide the game for us. He scored the crucial goals for us." - Park City coach Caro Caro

Song that gets him pumped up: "All I Have" by Haste the Day

Favorite fast food: Wendy's

What TV character he most identifies with: Dwight from "The Office."

CLASS 2A MVP

ROWLAND HALL FORWARD

Season stats: Scored 22 goals this season, added six assists.

Highlights: Had three hat tricks this season, including two in the state tournament and scored the goal that gave Rowland Hall the early second-half lead against St. Joseph in the championship game.

Quote: "He's just an intuitive goal scorer. He's quietly competitive but he doesn't put a lot of undue pressure on himself. He likes to be involved in the attack, and in the playoffs, I thought he was the most dangerous kid out there." - Rowland Hall coach Bobby Kennedy

Pre-game ritual: "My teammate Robbie Hull and I have a handshake we do right before the game starts."

Favorite sports drink: Blue Gatorade

Car he drives: Maroon 2003 Dodge Caravan Sport Minivan. It "tears up the road."

* Losing the Region 5 title to Bonneville didn't have much effect on how Bountiful performed in the state tournament. The Braves beat Orem, Mountain Crest, Springville and 4A newcomer Mountain View to be the only school to repeat as the state champion. This year's title is the Braves' state-record eighth championship.

* Richfield's Quaid Busk and Grand's Sebastian Roa were in a heated scoring race all season long. They were the top two goal scorers in not only 2A but all classifications and by the end of the regular season, each had 28. Busk edged Roa out in the postseason, scoring four goals before Richfield was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Busk finished with 32 goals and Roa had 29. Busk's total is good for third on the state's all-time list for goals in a season.

* Uintah pulled off the upset of the season by beating Logan - the top-ranked team in Class 3A for most of the season - in the first round of the state tournament. The Utes forced Logan into a shootout by playing solid defense and won 7-6 on penalty kicks. The Utes came into the tourney the No. 4 seed from Region 10.

* Brighton won its first state title since 2000 and gave coach Russ Boyer his first state title since he started coaching in 2001. The Bengals also won the Region 2 title.
