Missing Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer alone wasn't enough to doom the Jazz to their first home loss of the season. It took a convergence of events, each almost stranger than the last, punctuated by Hughes' 22-footer at the buzzer to give the Bulls a 101-100 victory.
Not only had the Jazz won their first six home games this season, they had won 33 of 34 home games dating to last season. Hughes, meanwhile, had hit game-winning shots before but never what he described as a "walk-off" with no time remaining.
"On that last shot that they made, we kind of fell asleep a little bit," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They came up with an offensive rebound and buried us. It just takes one play to beat you."
Derrick Rose more than lived up to his billing as the No. 1 overall pick, leading the Bulls with 25 points, including eight in the last three minutes. He had the ball in his hands again on the final possession, but missed an 18-footer with 2.7 seconds left.
The rebound, however, bounced hard off the rim and out to Hughes on the perimeter. C.J. Miles had left Hughes to crash inside after the rebound and paid the price. He raced back outside, but Hughes took one dribble and nailed his shot from the left side.
"When I saw it hit the rim," Miles said, "I knew I couldn't get it, I just immediately turned around and tried to find who was going to catch it because I knew all our guys had came to the basket, we were trying to get the rebound and seal the game."
Even with Miles charging at him, Hughes said he was able to get enough space for a good look at the jumper. "That last two minutes," Miles added, "whoever had the ball last, it looked like was going to win."
The Jazz (9-6) came into the night knowing they would be without Williams, Boozer, Kyle Korver and Jarron Collins. The list of injured grew to include Matt Harpring and Brevin Knight, leaving the Jazz with only nine players to finish the game.
Harpring's back gave out during warm-ups and Knight left with 8:30 to play after suffering a sprained left index finger. Ronnie Price replaced Knight and had seven points and three assists in the fourth quarter.
Price hit a three-pointer immediately after entering and had a hand in all the big plays down the stretch, finding Ronnie Brewer for a three-pointer, Andrei Kirilenko along the baseline for a layup and Mehmet Okur for a dunk.
But Price and the Jazz couldn't keep Rose bottled up, a defensive assignment that would have fallen to Williams, who is expected to return Wednesday. Rose drove for a layup with 47.1 seconds left and followed with a 10-footer spinning in the lane.
"He got into the lane and made shots." Price said, adding, "We kept trading baskets and you can't win games trading baskets, especially when they hit the last one."
The Jazz spent the first half out of sync, much like their shot clocks, which failed because of a system malfunction. It fell to public address announcer Dan Roberts had to provide updates on every possession with 15, 10 and 5 seconds remaining.
Miles said he rushed his first three-pointer thinking Roberts had called out 3 seconds, when it was really 9. "It was a terrible shot," he said. The Jazz, however, started trapping off the pick-and-roll in the third quarter and turned five steals into dunks or layups.
It still wasn't enough in the end. The Jazz dropped two games at EnergySolutions Arena in the playoffs, but their last regular-season home loss came March 20 against the L.A. Lakers. Before that, the last time they lost at home was Dec. 29 to Boston.
"We're shocked to lose that game period," Miles said, "because we should have won it. It doesn't have anything to do with us being at home."
