I have been shocked by how many times Utah legislators push bills to take away responsibilities from elected officials in cities, counties and even the governor. The latest installment of this dictatorial, manipulated control is Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, the self-appointed moral watchdog who interprets his narrow-minded bigotry and hate as "values." He wastes valuable government time trying to "send messages" to those he dislikes and wants to strip of any civil rights.
This year he's blocking the elected officials of Salt Lake City of their right to make decisions for the citizens who elected them ("SLC's domestic partners registry targeted by Senate panel," Tribune, Feb. 12). Mayor Ralph Becker was very clear during his campaign about his desire to create a domestic-partner registry, and he won by a large margin. The City Council unanimously agreed. That should send a clear message to Buttars that the majority of Salt Lake City residents support the mayor.
Salt Lake City residents did not elect Buttars to the Legislature. We did elect Mayor Becker and the City Council, and we trust them to make decisions for our community. Butt out, Sen. Buttars.
