Buttars must go

I am a semi-conservative, Republican-leaning Utahn, but what Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, is doing is disgraceful.

His opposition to Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker's domestic partner registry is horrible. This is not just a gay issue. This is an issue about people who live together having the same rights and benefits that both he and I enjoy by being "normal."

Like it or not, people do live together, and they may also be responsible for relatives and others who may need help. His bill is discriminatory and hateful.

I am a citizen of West Jordan. Why the residents here keep electing this bigot is hard to comprehend.

His calling a bill he opposed a "black baby" is just another example of the hateful remarks that continue to divide this nation ("Buttars' comment leads to rebuke and apology," Tribune, Feb. 13).

The Republican Party is in trouble as long as we keep electing officials like Buttars.

Residents of West Jordan need to wake up and take care of this problem.
