I am concerned about the increasing all-terrain-vehicle accidents in Utah. There were 32 reported deaths from ATV accidents from 2005-2007 (see www.atvsafety.gov/state/utah.html). With ATVs becoming more popular, the numbers are sure to rise. Currently, Utah law states that children under 8 cannot operate ATVs on public land, and a safety training certificate or driver license is required for those older than 8. However, if found without either, the ATV driver is fined only $50. There needs to be a greater deterrent than a $50 fine.
I am a nursing student who has seen children in critical care from ATV accidents. Extensive intensive care and rehab are required for many of these patients. I have seen parents devastated because they were unsure if their child would be paralyzed or cognitively impaired.
ATVs can be a great source of recreation, but it is easy to lose control. Parents should do more than just encourage their children to wear helmets, control their speed and use caution. They should make sure their child obtains a license and is trained how to operate these vehicles.
