Congratulations to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its support of Salt Lake City's ordinance protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens from discrimination in the workplace and housing ("Pro-gay statutes win city, LDS nod," Tribune , Nov. 11). We should all applaud others when they learn to treat other human beings fairly and stand up against discrimination. Many churches, organizations and families have known this for years, and I'm sure they welcome the LDS Church for eventually coming to this realization and look forward to its continued support.

For those Mormons who claim this is a continuation of their church's previous policy, years of documented history say otherwise. And if this was consistent with the LDS Church's previous policies, it wouldn't be headlines around the world, the lead story of evening news programs and being debated on Mormon blogs everywhere.

I welcome the change and hope it will bring about a level of civility that's been missing in Utah for far too long.
