Growth negatives

I applaud Jeff Clawson for calling our general approval of growth a "mindless pursuit" that leads to disastrous consequences ("What do we get from our mindless pursuit of growth?" Opinion, July 18). Our government and business leaders pursue growth, and every new business or building gets accolades. We are continually reminded that big families and more industry are good for all.

Thankfully, some in Utah see where this "progress" is leading us. Our 2-3 percent annual growth rate doubled our population from 1 million in 1967 to 2 million in 1996. So far we have handled this growth, but as we double again to 4 million by 2025 things are getting a little more crowded. It is a lot more difficult to find a picnic place in Mill Creek Canyon, and driving, shopping and fishing are more crowded.

There is a limit to how many souls can be accommodated in Utah and still find clean air, adequate water and just plain space to survive. I have been to China and India, and believe me, uncontrolled growth is not pretty.
