GOP self-destructing

The story about the activities of Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, trying to help his business buddy and contributor isn't at all surprising ("Lawmaker wanted Commerce chief fired," Tribune , June 25). Sadly, it's now just predictable GOP behavior, as expected as the sun setting in the west.

Henry Fairlie, the noted British observer of the American political scene, once noted that for many years GOP lawmakers have unfortunately succumbed to the utterly false and disastrous belief that their sole purpose as lawmakers is to speed the accumulation of great wealth and power among the elites.

Fairlie accurately argued that this overwhelming tendency to represent only the rich elite, together with President Ronald Reagan's misguided tax-cutting, regulation-hating model, will be a calamity for society and will ultimately contribute to the destruction of the GOP.

Nationally, the GOP is already best known for failing at virtually everything. Utah is slowly catching up. Rep. Wimmer is leading the way.
