As a student at Bingham High School, I was recently corrected by a teacher who told me that "merry Christmas" was politically incorrect and offensive to some and to use "happy holidays" instead.
My intent was not to offend. As the giver of the holiday wish, I cannot determine which is most applicable to the recipient. Being continuously corrected puts at risk my desire to offer up the wish at all and takes away from the intent of the greeting.
Some have decided that there is a right way and a wrong way to offer up expressions of this holiday season. I've decided to accept any bestowing of merriment or happiness and hope that others will in return, regardless of their beliefs.
It's not about who is right and who is wrong. So, please, stop being so defensive. Accept the greeting for what it is worth and enjoy this time of year.
