Calling California

So The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is setting up a phone bank campaign for its local Utah members. Is this phone bank to be used to help those suffering in Darfur? Nope. Maybe to raise funds for the hungry in a faraway Third World country? No. It is to call people in California and encourage them to vote in favor of a discriminatory proposition ("LDS call to ban gay marriage widens," Tribune, Oct. 8).

How can they can equate this campaign to a "Christ-like" activity? This is a sad example for Mormons to set, and one that 20 years down the line could come back to haunt them.

How would Utahns feel if people in New York suddenly got interested in one of our issues, say liquor laws, and set up a phone bank to try and correct our errant ways?
