Posted: 10:57 AM- The first Democratic contender has edged up to the starting line in the race against Salt Lake County Republican Councilman Mark Crockett.

Jonathan Jemming, an environmental policy analyst for the Utah Public Lands Policy Coordination Office, has declared his candidacy for District 4 - an east-side region that stretches up Emigration Canyon, covers Millcreek and even extends into parts of Sandy.

"Put on your running shoes," Jemming said. "This campaign is about expanding community involvement in county government, and we have a big race ahead."

The candidate pledged to promote cleaner air, more sustainable community planning and open-space preservation.

Born and reared on the west side, Jemming now lives in the Canyon Rim neighborhood along Salt Lake County's east bench. He has two young sons and enjoys coaching youth basketball, baseball and soccer.

Jemming - once an assistant attorney general - now serves on the Utah Supreme Court's advisory committee on Model Utah Jury Instructions. He also has worked with the Citizens' Coalition for Fairness and Democracy, the Utah Statewide Independent Living Council and the Brain Injury Association of Utah.
